Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is for students to learn process flowcharting/improving a process and summarizing the results.
Assignment Steps
Resources: Microsoft® PowerPoint® (or other software such as Vizio, Word, etc.)
Select a complex process from your personal life or work.
Note: This part of the assignment is to create a flowchart of a work or personal process as it currently exists. Keep in mind you will have to improve the process in a future assignment so make sure you select a process that is robust and has the complexity to demonstrate the course concepts. When you create the flowchart you will have to identify the metrics you will use to measure the current process. This will help you identify and measure process improvements.
Use Microsoft® PowerPoint® or other software including Vizio, Word, etc. to create a flowchart of the as-is process.
Note: Do not cut and paste a flowchart from the internet.
Define metrics and measure the current process.
Hint: As stated the process should be robust and complex. During week two you will calculate the defined process metrics including variation and process capability. Use Microsoft® Excel® and PowerPoint® to develop and display a control chart for the process. Evaluate the control chart and process metrics using Statistical Process Control (SPC) methods. Evaluate whether the process could benefit from the use of Six Sigma tools.
Use process improvement techniques to improve the process.
Use Microsoft® PowerPoint® or other software such as Vizio, Word, etc. to create an improved process flowchart.
Use judgmental forecasting, which is your professional judgment, to ascertain how the future process will perform according to your metrics.
Note: Naturally this class is not long enough for you to create, implement and measure in real time, so use your professional judgment on the future performance. That said the metrics and measurements must be realistic and logical.
Develop a 525-word executive summary in which you describe your process improvement project (including the as-is process flowchart and the improved process flowchart).
Format your assignment consistent with APA guidelines.
Note: This assignment will include a title page, a flowchart, a 525-word summary, and references. This means even if you use a personal process you must include text citations.
